The hypocrisy of criticizing Israel

”NATO bombed 5,000 civilians in Kosovo just because it was insulted; 27,000 Iraqi civilians were bombed during the American invasion because they posed a danger to the US; there is not a country in the world that can talk to us about morality.”

— Knesset Member Yisrael Hasson

Via ‘If European Countries Fail To Protect Their Jews, The State of Israel Will’, which notes the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, including crowds marching and shouting, “Death to Jews.”

The death of Palestinian civilians is horrifying and I’m not going to make excuses for it. But this is what war is. It’s not Rambo jumping out of a swamp or John Wayne striding out of the jungle. It’s children being killed by bombs. It’s what happens when America goes to war, when Russia does, when Ukrainians do, in Syria and Libya. It’s all the same thing.

Flavio Carrillo: Mitch, I think the problem here is that there is no strategy, no endgame. Mowing the lawn isn’t a plan. NATO may have killed 5000 civilians in Kosovo, but that ended, Milosevic is gone, and the Balkans are at peace.I see nothing like that on the horizon for Israel and Palestine. Utterly intractable situation.Ezra Klein says it better than me: via

Tim Malone: I think that the article makes a good point. Because islamic and Palenstinian people shout the loudest, or get a bunch of people together does not negate the fact that they are threatening Isreal. They are sneaking in through tunnels and killing people. They are sending bombs over. They have made no effort to disguise their hatred for the Jewish people. If someone did these thing to our country, we would have done worse in return.Just because some one or group speaks more loudly, does not mean they are right. Isreal has a right to defend itself. We would, and have done, the same. via

Alfred Poor: You make a good point, +Flavio Carrillo, but is it Israel’s responsibility to have an endpoint other than “please stop sending explosive devices across our border”? There has to be something short of the eradication of Gaza as a solution. What other nation would tolerate a prolonged string of missile attacks from a neighbor? via

Clell Harmon: My POV, Hamas are terrorist assholes, and the IDF is composed of, sadly, draftee assholes. And the normal civilian Palestinians are stuck in the middle.Yes, the cease fires are routinely violated by Hamas (NOT the Palestinians as a group), why?Because it benefits them to do so.  Israel heaps indignities upon the people of the territories on a daily basis, the group seen to be doing something are the heroes. For the longest time, I saw the things that the IDF did and wondered if they were the last military force on the planet without a PR department, then I learned what the issue really is.The IDF doesn’t have a career NCO force in their combat arms.  The Sargents are a year or so older than the troops and younger than their officers. There isn’t a crusty old NCO telling the 23 year old 2nd Lt (or whatever the rank of the lowest officer is in the IDF) that maybe blowing the hell out of that UN school might not be the best idea.  Or that ordering an artillery strike on kids playing soccer on the beach would be dumb, or maybe throwing rocks isn’t really a head shot from a sniper level offense. It boils down to both sides of the conflict being idiots and pray for the civilians stuck between them.Israel is NOT a friend to the US, the attack on the USS Liberty and the various spying scandals have proven that.  The Palestinians aren’t our friend either.  My vote is the US declares hands off and let the morons do what they’re going to do anyway. No more free stuff for either side.  maybe if we quit enabling them they’ll work it out… or wipe each other out.  Works for me either way. via

Brian Santo: Everybody merits criticism for slaughtering civilians in war. No exceptions. Bomb a hospital, you’re scum. Bomb a temple, you’re scum. Bomb a wedding party, you’re scum. War has been hard forever. It’s your choices during the war that make you what you are. Act like barbarian scum, that’s what you are. via
