What is so funny about dead animals? The answer is: Nothing. And yet Harambe, the gorilla who was shot and killed in May by security personnel at the Cincinnati Zoo after a 3-year-old boy climbed into his enclosure, has become in his death an all-purpose punch line across Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook — a meme to be reckoned with.

Today I learned that back in 2003, a group of young people in Sturgis, Michigan, age 17-20, plastered signs all over town reading “All your base are belong to us. You have no chance to survive make your time.” They said it was an April Fool’s prank. The chief of police said it could be interpreted as “a borderline terrorist threat” and arrested them.
