I’m back on Facebook

I’ve been mostly off Facebook for a week. I left because of Facebook’s well known history of privacy violations and willingness to be used for political manipulation. And because Facebook is a pain in the ass to use.

Those things are related. Facebook wants you to maximize the amount of time you spend on the service, and the best way to do that is to add anger and frustration to the emotional mix.

But at least for me Facebook is where to find conversations online. And I miss the conversations. There are people I connect with on Facebook who I want to keep in my life, and who I have no other way to connect with. Friends, former co-workers, and family members who live in other cities and states and countries. I have tried other platforms and those people are not on those other platforms.

So I’m going back to Facebook

I may revisit this decision another day.
