Anybody know what kind of snake this is? We passed on the sidewalk when walking Minnie yesterday evening.

I saw it from a distance and thought, “Looks like somebody dropped a woven leather leash of some kind. That’s odd.”

Then I thought, “Looks like a belt.”

Then I thought, “Holy crap it’s a snake.”

We gave it a wide berth. I’m not particularly phobic about snakes but I know that some snakes around here are poisonous.

I saw a rattlesnake in the park once. It rattled at me.

I got close enough to take a picture on the way back. Minnie showed no interest in the snake. The snake didn’t move.

I’m amazed to live in a place with snakes. Then again, even after 14 years in San Diego I’m sometimes amazed to live in a place where cactus grows outdoors. And after 22 years in California, I’m sometimes amazed to live in a place with palm trees.

  1. There are many colour morphs of garter snakes – this looks very much like the Checkered Garter Snake, common to the southern US, Mexico & central america
